There are some very important changes to the “Housing” section of Craigslist. Previously, you could create a nice layout using html styling elements. This allowed you to create ads that looked like property flyers or those with a “Click Here” image and hyperlink (such as the one below). You likely have this type of formatting if you use Postlets and other similar services to create Craigslist ads.
Recent Changes to Craigslist Real Estate Ads
Formatted housing ads are no longer allowed. All div, font, table, image, and span html tags are now stripped by Craigslist. This applies to new ads and existing ads within the housing category (they are still allowed in other categories). Hyperlinks are stilled allowed but you must display the actual url (not hyperlinked text). Hyperlinks related to images will not be visible.
Impact of These Changes
Housing ads (either for particular properties or inventory lists) must now be simple text ads (no borders, colored text, special fonts, etc.). Pictures are allowed, but they must be uploaded directly to Craigslist rather than embedded using html code. Hyperlinks can not be added to any images.
If you have any existing ads in the housing section of Craigslist, be sure to check them immediately. Your layout may be ruined and important hyperlinks (connected to images) will be gone. Depending on how much html formatting was in your ads, some ads may be completely obsolete and should be deleted.
Lanergy Solutions’ Craigslist Ad Builder
For Lanergy Solutions clients using our Craigslist Ad Builder, please be aware that we are in the process of creating new templates to adapt to this change. Our new templates will be text based and include compliant text hyperlinks. An image gallery will still be provided so that you may upload predesigned images to your ads. Stay tuned for the release of these new templates sometime next week!
